GM ensembles

The Greater Manchester Jazz Orchestra

The GMJO was the second of our ensembles formed and serves to provide a senior level jazz ensemble opportunity for the young musicians of the region to aspire towards. The the band benefits from bespoke original compositions with a contemporary style in a change to much of the mainstream repertoire used by youth jazz orchestras more locally.

The band is hosted by Chetham’s School of Music and showcases the talents of numerous Greater Manchester pupils whose musical journey has led them to become students at ‘Chets’. The Greater Manchester Jazz Orchestra demonstrates in a very genuine way how a specialist music school and high achieving music service students can work together to produce outstanding musical outcomes.

Membership Information: Each Autumn, tutors from the nine GM Hub Music Services nominate pupils for selection to become members. The GMJO meets three weekends each year and performs throughout the year, the annual membership cost is £120 per pupil (with a sibling rate of £90 each).

Membership is by invitation from your local music service – if you feel that you have the motivation and skills to benefit from this group please contact Wigan Music Service on 01942 776169.
