Wigan Instrumental Teaching Service provides high quality music tuition in Wigan schools through its team of eighty expert music leaders!

Which Instrument?

We provide tuition on almost every musical instrument. Whether you like the orchestral sound of the violin, the jazz sound of the saxophone or the rock groove of the drum kit, you can learn to play in school with one of our expert teachers.

Orchestral instruments belong to instrumental ‘families’. These are:

Orchestral Strings (available from Y2) – Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass

Brass (available from Y3) – Trumpet, Cornet, Tenor Horn, French Horn, Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba

Woodwind (available from Y3) - Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Oboe, Bassoon, recorder.

Voice (available from Y4) – Singing lessons are also available in school.

Guitar (available from Y3) – At primary school, guitar lessons are delivered on 3/4 size acoustic guitars. Pupils are taught a fundimental technique based on notation reading. This is the best starting point for stylistic diversity at a later stage.

Piano/Keyboard (available from Y2) – Pupils must provide their own keyboards with full size keys.

Orchestral Percussion (available from Y4) – Instruments are provided by the service and kept in school. Pupils are issued with practice pads and sticks for home practice.

Drum Kit - Available in some primary schools depending on whether the school has a kit. Widely available at secondary schools.

When and where will my child’s music lessons take place?

Lessons take place during the school day. Your child’s instrumental teacher will visit school on the same day each week. Pupils learn to play in small groups of up to three pupils and the length of lessons varies depending on the number of pupils in the group.Lesson charges vary a little from school to school, but the cost is normally in the region of £4.99 per week. In some cases, individual lessons can be arranged.

The service has a limited capacity to deliver 'private' style lessons at our evening music centres accross the Borough. Please contact us for details.
