Regional Ensembles

The Greater Manchester Youth String Orchestra

The GMYSO was created in 2013 following a special event that was created by the GM Music Hub, hosted by the BBC Philharmonic and which brought together some of the region’s finest young string players. The ensemble quickly established itself as one of the finest young string orchestras in the North of England, and has developed significantly in its ability to perform technically challenging and musically rewarding repertoire.

The player’s own musical journey has been enhanced by the facility to work intensively and in greater detail on music that is far more complex than that which they might have the opportunity to work on otherwise. They then take these enhanced skills back to their regular settings to the benefit of developing even higher levels of string playing across the entire region. The orchestra rehearses each year at Chetham’s School of Music and always takes part in the annual GM Music Hub Celebration concert.
