Regional Ensembles

Greater Manchester Folk Ensemble

Following the very successful launch of a new Greater Manchester ensemble, the Greater Manchester Youth Folk Ensemble (GMYFE) first met in January 2024 and is now establishing itself as one of the continuing GM ensembles.

Bringing together talented young musicians from across Greater Manchester to work with leading tutors from the world of Folk Music, we are thrilled to have booked Sam Partridge and Grace Smith to be the musical directors. Sam was musical director of National Youth Folk Ensemble 2018-2022 and Grace is currently musical director of Folkworks summer school at The Glasshouses, Gateshead. Both are in several active bands and their lively, fun and inclusive approach won the hearts of last year’s GMYFE cohort.

“I super enjoyed the freedom and opportunity to interject our own ideas and creativity into the process of arranging the pieces,” “Sam and Grace were so funny and kind, I am really excited to be part of this ensemble!” (quotes from previous GMYFE members)

The GMYFE rehearses three weekends during the year and this year will perform in Manchester Folk Festival as well taking part in the Greater Manchester Celebration Concert with all the other GM ensembles.
